Fall in Lava

by Zhu Liya, Xue Yuang, Li Shu

This project delves into the interconnectedness between humans and nature, the power of love, and visions of a symbiotic future with the environment by simulating the flow of lava, interaction with human silhouettes, and the regeneration effect triggered by an embrace between two people.

This interactive installation immerses participants in a simulated volcanic environment, where they witness the rolling flow of lava, along with sporadic sparks and smoke, on the screen. These visual patterns are created using TouchDesigner software, employing particle systems and noise functions to mimic the natural movement of magma.

A flat large screen is chosen as the projection surface to clearly showcase the delicate textures and dynamic shifts of the lava flow. Moreover, with the aid of a Kinect sensor, the movements and positions of viewers are tracked in real time, affecting the lava flow on the screen. As viewers wave their arms or move, they see their shadows interacting with the lava, creating unique waves and ripples.

A deeper level of interaction is triggered when any two viewers begin to embrace. This initiates a special interactive effect: the lava visuals gradually fade, replaced by blue and green particles that gently spread outward from the core of the embrace, symbolizing the dawn of rebirth and hope. This process not only illustrates the connection between the forces of nature and human emotions but also reflects the concept of symbiosis with the environment.

The creation of this project involved a range of technical and creative methodologies, including the design of dynamic visual effects, real-time processing of sensor data, and programming of interactive logic. Through this approach, we aim to explore new avenues of interaction between nature and humans, inspiring profound contemplation on environmental protection and sustainable coexistence.
