Gaia

by Rosie Walker , Ruiyang Wang , Alejandro Zipa , Dan Hearn

The Gaia project explores the relationship between humanity and the biosphere, examining the potential for harmonious integration with nature as well as the consequences of exploiting nature solely as a resource. The project is based on James Lovelock's Gaia hypothesis, which proposes that living organisms interact with their inorganic surroundings on Earth to form a synergistic and self-regulating complex system that helps to maintain the conditions for life on the planet.

We designed a cycle that represents the complexity of this system. When users interact with the project, it creates a momentary chaos. However, the system returns to its efficient state once interaction is finished. The project is audio-reactive and changes both in audio and graphically, providing sensory feedback. This allows viewers to question their role in this complex system by visually seeing where their hands are interacting with the animation.
